Middleport Primary Care Centre, Doctors Surgery & Community Facilities

Middleport Primary Care Centre was awarded to A&H Construction following a competitive design and build single stage tender.

The new facility was constructed from a steel-frame upon concrete pad and strip foundations forming a building with one and two storey sections incorporating precast concrete stairs and a lift.  The first floor is reinforced concrete on profiled steel permanent formwork and tensile reinforced decking.  The external walls are constructed from traditional cavity walls with a concrete blockwork inner skin and facing brickwork.  Certain areas have a rendered blockwork external skin.

The remaining areas of external wall were formed with powder coated aluminium external doors and windows.  Internal partition walls are generally insulated metal stud partitions with plasterboard finishes.

The internal building works included the installation of all internal demountable partitioning systems, suspended and plasterboard ceilings, kitchen installations, toilets and ancillary accommodation, mechanical and electrical services, including electrical distribution, heating and ventilation plant and equipment, lighting, security, fire protection and lift installation including all associated decorative finishes and fixings.

Externally all necessary services were installed along with connections.  Retaining walls, roadways, pavements, car parking, foul and surface water drainage and landscaping formed the external works.

The building provides a Doctor’s Surgery with associated Consulting Rooms, Minor Surgery Facilities and Offices. The finishes are constructed to the latest Healthcare Technical Guidance, providing a Cutting Edge Facility to the area. 

The building has been constructed to BREEAM Excellent rating and contains community facilities to assist in the revival of the area.  Under the requirements of the Contract the project was registered on the ‘Considerate Constructors Scheme’ with initial scoring having the potential for an award.

Built within a confined boundary and on a brownfield site, the project is being used as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area. We worked closely with ‘RENEW’, Stoke on Trent City Council and the local community throughout the project.
