The University of Birmingham, Various Projects

Since 2001 A & H Construction have been carrying out building projects for the University of Birmingham, projects to date accumulate to in excess of £10,000,000, with the partnership still flourishing today.  Below are four projects demonstrating samples of the works that we have carried out.

Elms Day Nursery – Two Storey Extension

As an extension to the existing Nursery complex, this particular project involved the erection of a two storey steel framed building on concrete foundations, the works also included all associated internal finishes and mechanical and electrical services.  Throughout the construction we received additional works for internal alterations to the existing Nursery.  This project was nominated for an ‘As Built Design & Quality Award’.

Medical School – Refurbishment of Rooms EF10A, B & F

The works were located on the first floor of the Medical School in rooms EF10A, B and F and the lift lobby area adjacent.  Works comprised the removal of the existing Lecture Theatres and the formation of a new Prosectorium facility.  Particular highlights were the re-configuration of walls, new specialist mechanical and electrical equipment and the installation of a vapour lighting scheme.

Lucas House – Boiler Room Extension

Due to the ever increasing number of students to the University of Birmingham, we were awarded the contract to extend the existing boiler room at Lucas House.  Initially the works involved the establishment of temporary water heating boilers located adjacent to the boiler house, this allowed for the decommissioning of the existing boilers and construction of the extension.  Following the commissioning of the new boilers the temporary boilers were removed and the extension constructed of single storey brickwork with a timber roof.

Chamberlain Clock Tower – Removal of Asbestos, Refurbishment of Lift and Replacement Water Tanks

The works located within the Chamberlain Clock Tower in Chancellors Court comprised of the MTHW F&E tanks and the DHWS cold feed tanks being removed on the 5th and 6th floor levels and refurbishment of the lift.  The work required the removal of asbestos insulation and associated contamination from asbestos residues including the erection of scaffolding to enable the works to be carried out.
