Windsor High School, New Sixth Form Centre
The project was awarded on a Design & Build basis and has ‘State of the Art’ facilities incorporated into the design. The new three-storey standalone building forms a Sixth Form Centre including a Sports Hall, highly advanced Science Laboratories with all associated services, car parking, hard and soft landscaping, to a BREEAM Very Good Standard.
The new Sixth Form Centre is constructed into an existing embankment with a series of retaining structures utilising the natural topography of the ground. Through using the existing ground levels we have managed to generate considerable cost savings for the Client associated with the removal and cart away of material. The Sixth Form Centre is of a steel framed construction with pre-cast concrete floor slabs forming the levels above the ground floor. The envelope is a mixture of masonry, wall cladding, kalwall, velfac windows and curtain wall glazing. The internal walls are constructed from blockwork not only achieving a robust construction but also assisting in the compliance of the thermal model. Open teaching spaces utilise sliding folding partitions creating flexible teaching spaces which are essential in modern teaching methods.
Being constructed immediately adjacent to the existing Sports Hall and Dance Studio along with school activities taking place nearby led not only to tight site working conditions but also the challenges associated with working in a live school environment where the health, safety and welfare of the staff and pupils of the school is paramount.
Through working collaboratively with the school we have ensured their safety whilst maintaining progress in line with the programme.
