Winterfold House School Classroom Block, New Classroom Block
Winterfold House School is located within a conservation area and thus required conservation approval along with the appropriate planning permission.
The chosen solution for construction was load bearing brick and blockwork, with a precast concrete first floor and associated precast concrete staircases. An extensive ground engineering cut and fill exercise was carried out prior to the installation of concrete pad and strip foundations to suit the ground levels of neighbouring school buildings.
The new classroom block has a traditional timber trussed roof clad with specialist Spanish roof tiles, the internal walls are a mixture of fair faced painted blockwork and plaster finished stud partitions.
The mechanical and electrical installation consisted of electrical distribution, heating and ventilation plant/ equipment, lighting, security, fire protection and lift installation.
The Client instigated the installation of Photovoltaic’s upon the roof providing additional energy for the building and the school. The building has a gross internal floor area of 1,000 square metres and pose the challenges we are accustomed to of working within a live school environment with restricted delivery times of before 8.30 am and between 9.30 am and 3.00 pm.
Regular escorted site visits where provided for the staff and children of the school giving them an insight into their new facility prior to handover.
“I wanted to write and say how delighted we are with the new classroom block. It has made a massive difference to the school and our whole community – pupils, staff and parents are absolutely thrilled with it”.
“I was extremely pleased with the entire building process and cannot praise all members of your team too highly”.
“As you know the site was cramped, right in the middle of existing school buildings and pupils were flowing past the site constantly. Your workmen were most efficient, courteous and considerate and it is tribute to them that the classrooms were built so quickly and with no incidents whatsoever”.
“In particular I would like to single out your foreman for special praise – he made it all happen on the day to day basis and his control of the site and liaison with me and the bursar was outstanding”.
“The quality of the workmanship and materials was excellent”.
“In short we are extremely pleased. I would be happy to recommend A&H to any other school”.
