A & H Tops Growth List

Barry Adams
Barry Adams, Managing Director of A & H
Halesowen-based A&H Construction and Developments has defied the economic downturn to feature high on a list of the UK's fastest growing firms.  The building and civil engineering company was ranked 24th in the Sunday Times PricewaterhouseCoopers Profit Track 100 which measures profit growth over a 3 year period. The league table, which is compiled by the Oxford based research and networking events company Fast Track, shows that the Black country firm has achieved an impressive annual profit growth of more than 86%.

A&H have found themselves in good company with the prestigious list including major household names such as Virgin Trains, Pret A Manger and Loganair. Other notable inclusions are clothing manufacturer Barbour and Merlin Entertainments, the world's 2nd largest visitor attraction operator.

The list, which was printed in a special Sunday Times supplement, draws attention to A&H's impressive customer portfolio which features such prestigious names as Corus, Matalan, A & J Mucklow, St Modwen, and Folkes Holdings. It also recognises the firm's wide and diverse customer mix as a key factor in its outstanding growth rate. The leisure, commercial and industrial markets have all been extensively and successfully catered for and the company has considerable experience in the local authority sector with a broad range of construction projects for schools, colleges and medical centres.

The £48million milk production facility in Somerset for Robert Wiseman Dairies was also highlighted - a project which demonstrated that, as well as maintaining a high level of service to clients on smaller local schemes, A&H can successfully manage major projects outside the region.

Managing Director Barry Adams who co-founded A&H in 1986 is delighted that the company has been so prominently represented in the list.

"Years of hard work across the Midlands region have earned us a strong reputation for excellence so I am naturally very pleased that our success is being recognised on a national level. This achievement is a reflection of the commitment and dedication of the whole team".

A&H was honoured at an awards dinner held at The Dorchester Hotel in London on 16 June, along with the other companies in the Profit track 100, and where they were nominated for a special award.

International Safety Award

A&H Construction has won this accolade for 8 consecutive years.

For an organisation to win this coveted award it must demonstrate that it has in place comprehensive health and safety policies, targeted plans and a clear commitment to health and safety from the shop floor to the boardroom. It must be committed to the promotion of a positive safety culture. The winning organisation must also have demonstrated the competence of those responsible for the management of health and safety and provide clear evidence about the improvements they have achieved in health and safety during the year.

Mr Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, says: For more than 50 years, BSC has led the way in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice in society. In the 2151 century, many organisations worldwide are understandably making health, safety and environmental management their top priority. Through achieving an International Safety Award, A&H Construction is helping to make our vision of a healthy and safe working environment a reality."

The Prime Minister added his congratulations; "I am delighted to send my congratulations to all of those organisations being presented with an award by the British Safety Council. These awards recognise the crucial success that these organisations and their employees have achieved in their pursuit of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental matters at an international level. The event provides an opportunity to publicly recognise the important contribution made by the British Safety Council in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice. I would like to place on record my appreciation of the support given by the Council in raising public awareness of the benefits effective health, safety and environmental management brings to business, employees, the environment and the economy as a whole."

Following rigorous assessment by an independent adjudication panel A&H Construction is proud to announce that we have won a prestigious International Safety Award from the British Safety Council. This is the 8th year running we have achieved the high standards required including accident rates that arebelow average, good safety policies and procedures with commitment to health and safety at the highest board level.

Bromsgrove School Greenpower Car: The Chicken

Congratulations to the Chicken Team of Bromsgrove School for finishing 27th at their second race of the season at Rockingham Raceway, Corby, Northamptonshire. The event, set up by Greenpower Education Trust, is to advance education in the subjects of sustainable engineering and technology to young people. The event saw 40 entries from schools around the country.

Work started for the Chicken Team many months ago thanks to sponsorship from ourselves which enabled the team to construct an electric car from scratch and finish 22nd at their first race. Since the first race several modifications had taken place increasing speed and battery life.

Unfortunately due to a technical problem the car did not start on the grid for the second race and were plagued with the problem for the first 8 laps. Once successfully resolved (duck tape) the team moved up the field over the next 3 hours covering 64 miles. Should the team have not encountered the problems a 17th position covering 79 milkes would have been achievable.

The drivers who took part were Fraser Foster, Brittany Collie, Alex Evans, Sam Fleming, Amy Mason-Towers and Henry Brewster who all did extremely well.

A further congratulations to the team for winning 'The Spirit of Greenpower' award for overcoming the problems in the race and always being cheerful and determined.
